Clearinghouse CDFI Finances Mama’s Kitchen, A Medically Tailored Meal Provider through NMTC
Clearinghouse CDFI provided $10 million of NMTC allocation to support Mama’s Kitchen, a San Diego-based nonprofit providing home-delivered, medically tailored meals and nutrition services to individuals living with serious illnesses. This includes cancer, HIV/AIDS, congestive heart failure, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. The organization also serves residents of rural and Tribal communities who face compounded barriers to care.
Sustaining Essential Services
Since 1990, Mama’s Kitchen has delivered over 12 million meals. As a Food as Medicine provider, the organization plays a defined role in supporting individuals whose health outcomes are closely tied to nutrition access. This project supports operational stability during federal funding reductions and the continued delivery of medically appropriate meals at no cost to medically vulnerable individuals living in economically distressed communities. The organization currently provides over 900,000 medically tailored meals annually to 5,165 individuals, with the capacity to exceed one million annually.
Advancing Workforce Opportunity
This project supports the creation and retention of 36 jobs accessible to low-income community members. Each position offers a living wage with comprehensive benefits. Full-time staff receive structured professional development and training that strengthens long-term employment pathways.
