Clearinghouse CDFI provided a $4.5 million loan to refinance and preserve La Posada Hotel, a historic hospitality landmark located along Route 66 in Winslow, Arizona. Designed by renowned architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter and opened in 1930, La Posada was once known as Fred Harvey’s “Last Great Railroad Hotel.” The property plays a vital role in Winslow’s cultural identity and serves as a key destination for travelers and tourists alike.

Preserving a Landmark and Supporting Regional Tourism
This financing solution restructures an existing New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) loan related to the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, NM. Following the conclusion of the NMTC compliance period, the property faced typical refinancing needs, and Clearinghouse CDFI structured a solution using La Posada as collateral to ensure the continued sustainability of both historic assets.

Sustaining Economic Impact Through Preservation
After being shuttered for decades, La Posada Hotel was restored beginning in 1997 through the leadership of preservationist Allan Affeldt. Today, the fully revitalized hotel welcomes more than 100,000 visitors annually—including 20,000 from low-income families—and maintains 80 full-time jobs. It also serves as an active AMTRAK stop along the Los Angeles–Chicago line, further enhancing regional connectivity and economic vitality.
