A 2016 ‘B’ BOLD Intern Follow-Up: Jesus Medina, 1 Year Later

Jesus B Bold internship participant

A Little Background on Jesus…

Jesus participated in the 2016 round of the Clearinghouse CDFI ‘B’ BOLD Internship Award Program as a junior at Ocean View High School. Read his original ‘B’ BOLD experience post here: https://www.clearinghousecdfi.com/event/jesus-2016-intern-experience.

Jesus is now entering his senior year of high school, and looks forward to college applications this fall. A year after completing his internship with Clearinghouse CDFI, Jesus shared with us what he’s been up to, and offered some advice for the new 2017 interns.

2016 Intern - Jesus

Q & A: Jesus Medina

Q: Let’s start with some advice for our 2017 interns. What would you say to them?

Jesus: “Share your ideas! Get involved more with what interests you. Get comfortable with staff.”

Q: That’s good advice. Do you feel like the ‘B’ BOLD program helped prepare you to be a leader?

Jesus: “The program helped me realize that I need to share my own ideas more and to speak up more.”

Q: Would you say this was your largest personal challenge as a ‘B’ BOLD intern?

Jesus: “Yes. I still have a long way to go, but I’ve been working on it. I think working will help a lot.”

Q: Ah, so you have another job now. That’s great! What do you do?

Jesus: “I work at El Pollo Loco. I’ve been there for a month now.”

Q: What are your plans for college?

Jesus: “I’d like to go to Spain to study medicine in the internationally accredited program. I want to go into pediatrics or anesthesiology.”

Q: When you imagine yourself 10, 20, 30 years from now, what do you see? What are your dreams?

Jesus: “I would love to publish medical research some day. I also want a big family and I’d like to travel.”

Q: Do you still remember any Clearinghouse CDFI staff in particular that were especially helpful during your internship?

Jesus: “Yes…Julie in Accounting taught me about wiring funds, which I enjoyed, and she had great jokes during our volunteering with WISEPlace. Amanda reminded me of my cousin and she was comfortable to be around. I wish we could have done a site visit together! Cesar was friendly and really helpful.”

Thank you again, Jesus, for participating in the very first round of the B’ BOLD Internship Award Program. On behalf of everyone here at Clearinghouse CDFI, good luck in all of your future endeavors and may you achieve all of your dreams!

About the ‘B’ BOLD Internship Award Program

Inspired by the values of the B Corp community to “build bridges,” the ‘B’ BOLD initiative was created by Clearinghouse CDFI to empower and develop the next generation of leaders. Clearinghouse CDFI, with the support and generosity of its community partners, offers an annual summer internship program for college-bound high school juniors and seniors hailing from low-income families.

The program aims to expose internship awardees to a real-life professional setting, provide job experience, and provide access to positive role models. The Allen Peters Baldwin ‘B’ BOLD Internship Program will help empower youths from low-income areas that do not have access to the same resources and opportunities.

Clearinghouse CDFI believes it is important to build a bridge to the next generation so that tomorrow’s leaders will continue to build mission driven businesses.

‘B’ BOLD Program Dedication

Clearinghouse CDFI is proud to dedicate the B BOLD Internship Award Program to Allen Peters Baldwin for his commitment to helping low-income families through Orange County Community Housing Corporation – SteppingUP. Mr. Baldwin embodies the spirit of the ‘B’ BOLD program with his ongoing dedication to serving others.
